John Smoltz became the 16th pitcher in major league history to reach 3,000 strikeouts when the Atlanta Braves‘ right-hander struck out Washington’s Felipe Lopez in the third inning. Smoltz, 40, received a standing ovation after Lopez swung and missed on a 2-2 pitch for the second out of the third inning.

Manager Bobby Cox professes to have been unconcerned about how right-hander Tim Hudson would do in Monday’s start against the Nationals.
“He said he was fine,” Cox said, as if to close the case.
Hudson’s word was one thing. But until Cox actually saw radar gun readings in the low-90s at Turner Field, he couldn’t have been sure Hudson was truly “fine.”
Part of the problem might have been a flu bug, which made the rounds in the Braves‘ clubhouse. Hudson had it worse than most. He was the scheduled pitcher in Colorado on April 10, a game that was snowed out. It was possible Hudson wouldn’t have been able to start that game, and, if he had, he might not have finished.
